ORCHESTRA MANAGER/LIBRARIAN
The National Academy Orchestra of Canada is a nationally recognized training school celebrating its 35th anniversary season this year. It is the orchestra-in-residence for the 36-year-old Brott Music Festival. The NAO’s high artistic standard, varied repertoire, performance opportunities and success of its graduate musicians is considered a crown jewel in the vast musical legacy left by its late founder, Boris Brott. Brott Music Festival is Canada’s largest orchestral music festival and is a cultural mainstay based in Hamilton, Ontario every summer.
OVERVIEW OF POSITION
Status: Full-time/part-time – this combined position requires a full-time commitment from approx. May-August and part-time for the remainder of the year
National Academy Orchestra of Canada/Brott Music Festival requires an enthusiastic musician with strong interpersonal skills to fill the dual roles of Orchestra Manager and Music Librarian. This full-time/part-time position is a perfect fit for a freelance musician or an individual desiring flexibility in their career. This combined position requires a full-time commitment from approx. May-August and part-time for the remainder of the year.
The successful candidate should have experience as an orchestral musician, strong organizational and computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite etc.). Successful candidate will work closely with Artistic and Executive Directors within an annual budget to plan educational and pedagogical programming including seminars, masterclasses, clinic, hiring of faculty staff and mentor musicians.
Remuneration: $25/hour

DETAILED DUTIES
Orchestra Manager Position
Programming and Scheduling: Aid Artistic Director and Executive Director in programming for the National Academy Orchestra training program, and events throughout the year.; Plan rehearsal/concert schedules; Plan educational and pedagogical programming for summer session including seminars, masterclasses, clinics etc.; Aid administrative staff in finding suitable rehearsal space.; Connect with outside administrations to schedule rehearsal space, and room rentals; Research appropriate topics for educational component of summer program; Be present at all rehearsals, concerts, seminars, masterclasses, and clinics to take attendance and monitor activities.
Advertising, Auditions, and Recruitment: Provide content to marketing to develop advertising recruiting musicians to audition for the National Academy Orchestra; Organize and execute live auditions across Canada as well as track recorded submissions; Connect with educational institutions across Canada to advertise and recruit, as well as individual professors and music instructors; Maintain list of auditioning musicians, pre-screen auditions and prepare list for Artistic Director; Work with Artistic Director to select musicians from audition applicants; Recruit extra musicians and mentors; Contract concertmasters, principal string players, woodwind, brass, and percussion mentors, as well as extra musicians; Provide website updates to web designer for the National Academy Orchestra website.
Payroll and Budgeting Work with the Head of Finance to negotiate fees and travel stipends for visiting players, book travel; Work within budget provided by Head of Finance; Create budgets and quotes for events outside of the summer training period; Payroll for all orchestral musicians, educators, and clinicians.
Contracting: Contracting all orchestral musicians as per Artistic Directors and Executive Director’s requirements including the National Academy Orchestra summer program and external organizations that partner with the Brott Music Festival; Update and maintain contracts.
Reporting: Report on daily activities of National Academy Orchestra musicians; Work with Department of Development and Executive Director to provide necessary statistics and program information for reports, grants, and applications; Tracking past NAO participants and maintaining a database of this information.
Communications: Maintain contact with National Academy Orchestra musicians upon their acceptance into the program; Create information packages for new musicians entering the NAO training program including information on housing, contracts, schedules, venue locations, and general information on the City of Hamilton; Maintain regular contact with NAO musicians during their time in the program providing guidance and support; Maintain regular communications with Executive Director and Artistic Director.
Orchestral Librarian
Work with Artistic Director and Executive Director to assess and confirm needs for the National Academy Orchestra’s summer program; Create spending forecast based on music needs; Place rental and purchase orders based on music needs; Create parts from pre-existing music; Prepare music for National Academy Orchestra musicians, and guest musicians; Maintain music database; Scan, email, and mail parts to musicians in a timely fashion; Collect music at the end of performances, sort, and return to library; Add new acquisitions to database and shelve them; Collect bowings from principal strings and add them to all parts; Return rental parts as per rental contract.
